Hank was a pretty ordinary guy and a pretty decent father until he became addicted to potion. Potions make him feel invincible and happy in the moment, often allowing him to forget painful memories, but when he stops drinking, he becomes incredibly sick. In order to stop himself from feeling sick, he just doesnt stop drinking. Once he starts, hell drink anything in sight, as he attempts to delay the effects of drinking and forget his own painful memories. Eventually, he will run out of potion and pass out. As being passed out in the streets can be dangerous, he has his ten year old son follow him, so that he can drag him home once he passes out.
